AHCA/NCAL is a trade organization with approximately 11,000 members. Since 1996 AHCA/NCAL has used the concepts of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award as the basis for its three step program for the long term care profession. At the Step I level, applications are reviewed by Examiners who have received special training to qualify as judges for the award program.
The awards are sponsored by AHCA/NCAL Associate Business Member McKesson Medical-Surgical, a leading distributor of medical supplies and equipment to physician practices, surgery centers, hospitals, home care, and extended care facilities, and My InnerView, a Web-based applied research and quality-management company that supports leaders across the entire assisted living, senior housing and skilled nursing profession with tools to measure, benchmark and improve performance.

Stonebrook's iLounge Opens
Who says internet cafes and lounges are just for young, tech savvy people? Not the residents of Stonebrook Healthcare, a skilled nursing facility in Concord. On Thursday, May 8, 2008, Stonebrook had a ribbon cutting ceremony for it's new iLounge. Lori Cooper, Administrator says, "The iLounge is open to all of the residents in the facility. We want to empower our residents through the use of technology. At Stonebrook we want to move beyond what is common practice and expectations of a nursing home to what is better for our residents and creates a better quality of life."
The iLounge offers three computer stations as well as wi-fi connectivity. Each station is connected to a High Speed Cable Modem line via a private network.
The residents are able to use the computers at their leisure for several purposes including surfing the Internet at blazing speed, network gaming, checking e-mails, chatting with friends and relatives, doing research or just relaxing and gathering information.
The cable connection makes it possible for the skilled nursing residents to view news broadcasts from other countries, listen to music and radio from all over the world. Stonebrook provides classes as well as one-on-one instruction to enable the residents to learn how to use the computers and enhance their skills. "It is a wonderful thing. I have never used a computer before and it is so exciting," says Emma Long, resident of Stonebrook.

Stonebrook Managers Complete CERT Program
Congratulations to the 11 department managers of Stonebrook Healthcare Center for completing the Community Emergency Response Team CERT program. The six-week training program covered basic skills that are important to know in a disaster when emergency services are not available.
Stonebrook is 120-bed skilled nursing facility located in Concord. "Disasters are hard on everyone but especially on the people we serve. Disaster preparedness is a must!" states Stonebrook Administrator, Lori Cooper. "The loss of routine, diet, equipment, familiar surroundings and caregivers increases the physical stress to an already fragile group of people. At Stonebrook, our team of caregivers is working together with outside agencies to mitigate hazards, be prepared when disaster strikes by participating in planning and training programs that teach us to respond appropriately and recover from disasters. Our department managers completed the CERT program to assist us with this process".
CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. People who go through CERT training have a better understanding of the potential threats to their home, workplace and community and can take the right steps to lessen the effects of these hazards on themselves, their homes or workplace. If a disaster happens that overwhelms local response capability, CERT members can apply the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to give critical support to their family, loved ones, neighbors or associates in their immediate area until help arrives. When help does arrive, CERT members provide useful information to responders and support their efforts, as directed, at the disaster site. CERT members can also assist with non-emergency projects that improve the safety of the community. More information about the CERT program in Concord is available by contacting the CERT hotline at 925-603-5933.
